Jujube Tree, Sidr Tree & Ziziphus: What’s the Difference?

The words jujube, Sidr and Ziziphus are often used as though they describe the same tree.

They do not.

This confusion is especially common in discussions about Sidr honey, where several trees belonging to the same botanical genus may be given similar local or translated names.

Understanding the difference matters because the tree helps define the landscape, flowering season and origin of the honey produced from its blossoms.

Ziziphus Is a Genus, Not a Single Tree

Ziziphus is a genus of plants belonging to the Rhamnaceae family.

Within this genus are many different species.

Three names appear particularly often when discussing jujube trees and Sidr honey:

  • Ziziphus spina-christi
  • Ziziphus lotus
  • Ziziphus jujuba

They are related, but they are not interchangeable.

Ziziphus spina-christi: The Arabian Sidr

When people in the UAE and much of the Arabian Peninsula speak about the Sidr tree, they are commonly referring to Ziziphus spina-christi.

It is a shrub or tree naturally associated with dry and desert environments across a broad region extending from western Africa toward South Asia.

In the UAE, the tree is known locally as Sidr, while its fruit may be called nabq.

The species is well suited to harsh landscapes and can be found in wadis and other dry environments.

For honey, this distinction is particularly important.

When a honey from the UAE, Yemen or neighbouring regions is described as Sidr honey, Ziziphus spina-christi is one of the key botanical species to identify when documenting its origin.

The tree, however, is only part of the story.

The valley, rainfall, altitude, flowering conditions, surrounding vegetation, beekeeping methods and harvest season all influence the character of the final honey.

This is why two Sidr honeys can share a botanical origin and still taste remarkably different.

Ziziphus lotus: A Different Ziziphus of the Mediterranean and North Africa

Ziziphus lotus is another accepted species within the same genus.

Its natural range extends through parts of the southern and eastern Mediterranean and into the Arabian Peninsula.

It is particularly relevant when discussing North African Ziziphus landscapes.

In Morocco and neighbouring regions, local terminology such as Sedra or Sidr may sometimes be used around Ziziphus plants, which can easily create confusion for international consumers accustomed to associating the word “Sidr” exclusively with Arabian honey.

Botanically, however, Ziziphus lotus and Ziziphus spina-christi are distinct species.

That difference should be stated clearly whenever the botanical origin of a honey is known.

Ziziphus jujuba: The Common Jujube

Ziziphus jujuba is the plant most commonly associated internationally with the words jujube, Chinese date or red date.

It is another member of the Ziziphus genus, but it should not automatically be identified as the Arabian Sidr tree.

Its native range is centred in northern and eastern China through to South Korea, although cultivation has spread it to many other regions.

Its fruit is widely consumed fresh or dried and has become familiar far beyond its original range.

This is where much of the naming confusion begins.

A translation may describe both Sidr fruit and cultivated jujube fruit using similar terms such as “jujube” or “date”. But similar common names do not make the trees botanically identical.

So Is a Jujube Tree the Same as a Sidr Tree?

Not necessarily.

“Jujube tree” is a common name that is most often associated internationally with Ziziphus jujuba.

“Sidr”, particularly in the UAE and Arabian context, commonly refers to Ziziphus spina-christi.

Other Ziziphus species, including Ziziphus lotus, may also have regional names that overlap in translation.

This is why the scientific name is so useful.

Instead of relying only on the word Sidr, Sedra or jujube, a serious description of honey should identify the botanical species whenever it can be verified.

Why This Matters for Sidr Honey

A botanical name does not tell you everything about a honey.

But it gives you an important starting point.

For example, simply writing “Sidr Honey” does not explain:

  • where the trees grew,
  • which Ziziphus species was dominant,
  • when flowering took place,
  • whether the apiary was in a mountain valley, wadi or cultivated landscape,
  • what other flowers were present,
  • how the honey was harvested,
  • or how the batch was handled afterwards.

What About the Traditional Uses of the Sidr Tree?

The Sidr tree has a long history of traditional use across Arab societies.

Official UAE botanical resources document traditional uses of its fruit, leaves, bark and seeds, including uses associated with food, hair and skin care and traditional remedies.

These traditions are part of the cultural history of the plant.

They should not, however, be confused with proven medical effects.

Traditional use tells us how communities have interacted with a plant over generations. Clinical evidence is a separate question and requires a different level of scientific evaluation.

A Tree Is Only the Beginning

Sidr honey is sometimes discussed as though identifying the tree were enough to understand the honey.

It is not.

The tree gives the bees a floral source.

Rainfall, heat, soil, altitude and season shape the landscape. The beekeeper decides where the hives stand and when the honey is harvested. Every batch carries the result of all these factors together.

The most useful question is therefore not simply:

“Is this Sidr?”

It is:

“Which Sidr, from where, harvested when, and under what conditions?”

That is where the story of the honey really begins.
