Can Honey Really Heal Wounds?

Unlike most traditional honey claims, this one has genuine clinical backing — and a genuine safety distinction most people never hear about.

Of every health claim commonly made about honey, this is the one with the strongest scientific footing — strong enough that specific honey-based products are formally cleared as medical devices in the United States and marked for clinical use in Europe. That is a genuinely different category of evidence from most claims examined in this series. But it comes with a distinction that matters more than almost anything else in this article: the honey used in those studies is not the honey in your kitchen jar.

The Product Behind the Claim Is Not Food Honey

When research and regulatory clearance refer to “medical-grade honey,” they mean something specific: honey that has been gamma-irradiated to eliminate bacterial spores, standardised for consistent antibacterial activity, and manufactured under medical device regulations — not simply raw honey spooned from a jar.

Manuka honey-based products such as Medihoney have received FDA clearance in the United States specifically as wound care devices, and are CE-marked for clinical use across Europe. This is one of the few instances where a traditional honey claim has cleared an actual regulatory bar for a defined medical purpose — a meaningfully stronger evidentiary position than the claims examined elsewhere in this series.

Where the Evidence Is Genuinely Strong

A 2015 Cochrane review — among the most rigorous standards in evidence-based medicine — found that honey dressings healed partial-thickness (second-degree) burns approximately four to five days faster than conventional treatments such as silver sulfadiazine. This is a robust, well-replicated finding, not a single small study.

A 2013 academic review examining honey’s mechanisms found consistent benefit for acute wounds and superficial burns specifically, attributing the effect to several measurable properties: high acidity that inhibits bacterial growth, an osmotic effect that draws fluid from the wound bed, natural hydrogen peroxide production, and antioxidant content that may reduce inflammation.

Honey’s natural acidity and hydrogen peroxide content inhibit a range of bacteria, including some antibiotic-resistant strains.

Osmotic Effect

Honey’s sugar concentration draws fluid out of the wound, helping to reduce swelling and limit the moisture bacteria need to thrive.

Antioxidant compounds in honey are associated with reduced inflammatory response at the wound site.

Where the Evidence Is Weaker — Wound Type Matters

The same 2013 review that found clear benefit for acute wounds and burns also reported honey to be ineffective for chronic leg ulcers — a different category of wound with different underlying causes. A separate Cochrane review of venous leg ulcers found mixed results, with some signal of benefit but not enough consistent data to draw a firm conclusion.

Diabetic foot ulcers sit in between: several small studies show promising reductions in wound size and bacterial load, but this remains an active area of research rather than a settled conclusion. The evidence for honey in wound care is genuinely strong — but only for specific wound types, not as a universal claim.

An Important Safety Distinction

Every study and regulatory clearance referenced above used sterilised, medical-grade honey — never raw honey directly from a retail jar. Raw honey, including all of Meski’s honeys, is a food product, not a wound care product. It has not been sterilised to remove naturally occurring bacterial spores, including Clostridium botulinum, which pose a genuine risk when introduced into an open wound, particularly for infants, immunocompromised individuals, or deep and serious injuries. Raw honey applied to minor, superficial cuts by a healthy adult carries a different — and much lower — risk profile than applying it to a serious wound, but it is never a substitute for medical-grade products or professional care. If in doubt, consult a healthcare professional.

This is precisely why Meski does not market its honeys as wound care products, despite the genuine clinical evidence summarised above. The evidence supports a specific, sterilised, medical product — not the raw honey in your pantry, however excellent its origin.

Medical-grade honey is gamma-irradiated to eliminate bacterial spores and standardised so every batch has consistent antibacterial activity — a manufacturing and regulatory process entirely separate from food-grade raw honey production.

Not at all — it is some of the most credible evidence honey has for any health claim, confirmed by Cochrane reviews and real regulatory clearance. The nuance is entirely about which product the evidence applies to, not whether the evidence itself is solid.

Most published wound care research has focused on Manuka honey from New Zealand. We are not aware of equivalent clinical trials specifically on Sidr or Samar honey, and would not extend Manuka’s findings to our honeys without direct evidence.
